The pup Lilyopterix joined Johnny D and I on a merry afternoon bike ride through the Metroparks this past Saturday. We strapped her good and tight into the basket on the front of my bike and took off on the path along the river. This was her first bike adventure, so I was afraid she might be nervous, but she seemed to really enjoy looking around her as we sped through the trees. Her little dog nose was all a'quiver with the woodsy scents and the smells of Summertime cookouts.

Julia Kuo is a dear friend of mine and a terrifically talented illustrator. She has embarked on a project called 100 Days in Cleveland in which, for one hundred days, she draws one of the many local places she loves. It's a treat to see so many familiar corners of Cleveland conveyed as colorful illustrations; ink-and-paper snapshots seen through the eyes of someone who appreciates the special nooks and quirky details of her community.

I'm honored to share that Julia included our home as one of her favorite Cleveland places, which is super awesome. To see our living room through the eyes of another artist is pretty rad.

Lately, I've been feeling a little down in the dumps. But then I saw a news story about an elderly lady who lost her house and all her belongings to a tornado. Two of her tree cats found their way back to her shortly after the storm cleared, but her third cat had been missing for nearly a month. During a reporter's interview with the woman in front of her demolished home, her third cat, bedraggled but alive, wandered into view. She scooped him up, held him close and whispered, "I have everything in the world, now."

I was touched. And I was reminded that I'm fortunate to have a home and a little family. With good health, some sunshine, fresh springtime air, the occasional croissant and the love of others, I have everything in the world.

I'll be spending nearly every waking moment of my weekend finishing up preparations for my AG Gallery show, which opens this Monday. This little exhibition will include lots of cut paper and a few paintings inspired by my St. Joe camping trip.

This is the little blurb about the show:

Claire Mojher is a designer/illustrator in the Design Studio who often has dreams of flying. 

Paying tribute to her fascination with things that float, glide or defy gravity, and her occasional desire to simply escape, Claire’s one-woman show—Flight—debuts today in the Gallery. 

The artwork on display will be cut paper and paintings. The birds are cut and layered paper in framed glass. The plein air landscapes are either watercolor or acrylic. They were inspired by a recent camping trip to Port St. Joe, Florida, where Claire spent six glorious days among sand dunes and cypress. Taking flight into the wild is something she would do every day, if she could.

Spent the last several days camping with my husband and parents in Port St. Joe, Florida. It was wonderful to flee the grayness and damp chill of Cleveland and spend 7 days drenched in sunshine, coastal breezes and drifting woodsmoke. I think I could go camping for a month and not get sick of it.

Cooking corn or fresh waffles over the fire, warming tea and made-from-scratch chili on the camp stove, falling asleep to the sound of wind through the pines and palms with the full moon glowing in the East, and opening your eyes to clear sunshine, surrounded by soft morning birdsong and the promise of a day spent lounging on the beach or kayaking in the bay... That's my heaven.

They're about 5" x 7" and made from cut and layered paper mounted on tiny wooden blocks and foam sponges. These are my first attempt at semi-detailed cut paper work, and I'm pretty thrilled with how they turned out.
The exhibition runs through April 30th!

As much as I really do love Winter with all its snowy softness and cozy closeness, after a while I long to throw off my many scarves and let my toes run free from their boots.

Happily, yesterday was the first day of Spring! And not a moment too soon. Hooray for little green sprouts nosing their way up to peek at the sunshine, and a cheerful how-do-you-do to birdsong and mild lake breezes.

A Birthday Poem

There once was a girl who was stuck in the snow
Who wanted to visit, but just couldn't go.

It was her mom's birthday. She wished she was there.
Perhaps she could float in a balloon with hot air?

Or maybe a canoe, magic carpet, or ferry!
But, alas, she could not join the fun and be merry.

She wanted to ship out warm wishes and glee -
Something sunny and happy where she could not be.

Just what could bring cheerful bright wishes, unsaid?
So she posted some flowers of orange instead.

A bundle of sunshine, a dollop of joy,
From afar she will yell, "Happy Birthday, Ahoy!"

Mommy, I wish you great fun and good cheer,

The talented young artist Corey Parker passed away December 30th after a brave battle with a rare form of heart cancer.

Corey’s artwork makes this world a brighter, more beautiful place. I’m lucky enough to have one of his pieces in my home, and it’s one of those things that doesn’t fade into the background over time. It catches my eye each day and reminds me of how warm and sincere Corey was. Every time I see it, I’ll think of Corey with fondness.
